I felt pretty secure in my fitness right into my thirties. And then, on a flight home from New York in 2017, a nasty blood clot in my leg woke me up to the unlucky roll of my genetic dice. After emergency surgery and weeks of medication, my nurse outlined the challenge ahead of me. Every month that I could avoid post thrombotic syndrome, would significantly reduce my risk of a life with impaired mobility.
Unable to fully straighten my leg at first, I headed to the swimming pool to rebuild my strength. A few weeks later, I joined the gym and jumped into exercise classes. I discovered that filling my schedule with regular classes was an excellent outlet for my energy - and a lot more enjoyable than cleaning or other 'perfectionist' pursuits.
At the same time, stress, business, relationships, parenting - all the things - demanded my attention. Just as with my body, what I'd always done wasn't necessarily what I would need for the future. To cut a long story short - I made the changes that would let me embrace life as a positive, passionate, and energetic 'work in progress'.
12 months after listening to my nurse's warnings, I was relieved to know the statistics were on my side again. I had hugely reduced my risk of further injury, and better still, my muscle mass had increased, I had a leaner body shape and simply felt so much better.
Now that I felt good about my body - and not so scared of what might lie below the surface - I was inspired to learn so much more about what could be possible for me and for others.
I have transformed from a keen student to an enthusiastic class leader for West Beach Fitness in Whitstable and JAG Outdoor in Faversham, and I am now a CIMSPA qualified personal trainer.
One of the most exciting revelations is how I can make the connection between what my body does for me and the greater research that is now available to us all. The differing needs of women and men in exercise, diet and hormones can and should be factored into every personal training plan.
My journey might be different from my clients' in all sorts of ways, but I hope we have this in common - I love my workouts with my personal trainer too! Book in for your training sessions and you can be a fitEE too!
